Karen Berger

Editora de DC Comics, recordada por su labor en el subsello VERTIGO. Editora experimentada, con casi veinte años a cargo de dicha línea, coordinó a un sinnúmero de autores en busca de nuevos argumentos e ideas renovadoras en el ámbito del horror y de la fantasía, abriendo nuevos caminos en ambos géneros, caracterizándose en su gestión por la libertad creativa otorgada a los guionistas y dibujantes.

Graduada en 1979 en el Brooklyn College, en las especialidades de Literatura Inglesa e Historia del Arte, Karen Berger entró en el mundo editorial de los cómics como asistente de Paul Levitz en DC Comics. Más tarde, cuando Levitz escribía Legion of Super-Heroes, se convirtió en su editora pero, como el horror fue lo que siempre llamó su atención, llegó a ser editora de House of Mystery antes de que Len Wein le pasara el testigo como editora del segundo volumen de Swamp Thing y promocionara y diera total libertad creativa a un pujante Alan Moore, logrando con ello convertir The Saga of Swamp Thing en un hito artístico que marcaría los pasos a seguir en el seno de la editorial.Tras esto y la edición de Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, Berger ayudó a un joven Neil Gaiman a la creación de la saga que sería uno de los grandes estandartes de VERTIGO: The Sandman. Creada esta subdivisión editorial, la editora se enbarcó en la búsqueda de talentos británicos para los guiones de series que más tarde se se reunirían en una misma línea, entre ellos Moore, Gaiman, Morrison, Milligan, Ennis, Ellis.

El sello VERTIGO nació en 1993, dirigido a lectores maduros, incorporando bajo esta etiqueta colecciones que ya se publicaban y que la misma Berger había ayudado a crear (Shade the Changing Man, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Black Orchid, The Sandman, entre otras), junto a las del malhadado sello Touchmark que Disney iba a gestionar pero que abandonó (Sebastian O, por ejemplo), además de obras de nuevo cuño como Enigma o Death: High Cost of Living.

Berger cosechó éxito y logró seguir publicando sin interrupción nuevos títulos para este mal llamado sello "independiente" del mainstream estadounidense: Preacher, Transmetropolitan, 100 bullets, etc. En 2007 creó el subsello Minx dentro de VERTIGO, destinado a un púbblico femenino adolescente, que cerró un año más tarde. Durante este tiempo fue nombrada Editora Supervisora y tiempo después, hasta hoy, desempeña el cargo de Senior Vice President y Executive Editor del sello VERTIGO en DC. Su gestión ha sido tan apreciada por el público americano que el conjunto de series aparecidas bajo su gestión son conocidas entre la aficion como "Bergerverso".

Berger contrajo matrimonio con Richard Bruning, Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de DC Comics y Director Creativo de la misma (formando de este modo, de todas las que existen, la pareja con más poder de decisión de DC).
